Black Excellence Awards

Award recipients should be alumni/ae or former student of Texas Tech University with the exception of Community Service Award, but need not be a member of the Alumni Association. Awards may be given posthumously. They may be awarded on separate occasions to the same person in more than one category. Each should be a person who has brought credit to the Texas Tech Black Alumni Community and its alumni/ae. Preference should be given to those who are able and willing to be physically present to receive the award

The award committee will select the award recipients from among the nominations that it receives. The Black Excellence awards are intended to honor service, integrity, excellence and resilience in their career, public service, business community or at Texas Tech University. Awards will be announced the the Black Excellence Brunch presented by the College of Mass Communications.

Award Categories

  • Distinguished Recent Alumni honors an alumnus/alumna who has graduated within the past fifteen, ten, and five years

  • Distinguished Alumni honors an alumnus/alumna who has graduated 30 years ago or more

  • Rising Raider: honors a current Texas Tech undergraduate student who has demonstrated service, integrity, excellence, or amazing resilience throughout his/her academic career

  • Pioneer Award honors an alumnus/alumna of any year who has demonstrated excellence, thought leadership, or innovation throughout his/her career

  • Community Excellence honors an alumnus/alumna of any year who has performed outstanding public/community service throughout his/her career

  • Distinguished Entrepreneur honors an alumnus/alumna who has demonstrated the ability to establish a track record of excellence in a new business, or turn around or significantly grow an established business.
